Objectives Clinical Assessments and Interventions Follow-up Actions 211 If injury is minor, provide initial treatment and counseling. ● When bleeding is under control, apply bandage to hold dressing in place. ● Do not impede fluid or bleeding from ears, nose, or mouth. ● Arrange for immediate transfer to hospital. ● Cleanse wound and apply sterile dressing as needed. ● Limit activity for 24 hours. ● Advise to take clear, cold, sweet liquids for 8 hours followed by reduced amounts of food for next 24 hours. ● Instruct in reporting signs or symptoms of more serious head injury and seeking emergency treatment. – Change in pupil size – Increasing headache – Increasing drowsiness or confusion – Extremity weakness – Paralysis – Loss of consciousness – Nausea or vomiting Guideline continues on next page
