Lotion re- pellents are preferable to ensure that the sunblock is not compro- mised. The combination prod- ucts are not recommended because there is only a short ac- tion time. – Apply sunscreen to cover ears, lips, nose, and other areas prone to sunburn. – Wear protective clothing (e.g., broad-brimmed hat and long- sleeved shirt) and use an um- brella. Apply sunscreen under clothing. – Avoid direct sunlight exposure if taking photosensitizing drug (see the following table). ● Instruct employee about skin self- examination to observe for abnor- mal moles or lesions. *Sunscreen chemically reacts with UV light when it comes in contact with the skin, changing it to heat that evaporates from the surface. Sun- block (e.g., zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, talc) physically blocks out (scatters, reflects) the light.
