The OHN should collaborate with the industrial hygienist and other safety personnel when developing a compendium of chemical agents located in the workplace. Conducting work- place walk-throughs with an industrial hygienist and safety personnel to identify potentially toxic exposures is essential. Nursing Roles The OHN is responsible for participating in the development of a treatment plan for employees who are exposed to toxic agents. The nurse can provide programs to educate employees in pre- venting exposure to poisons and taking actions when exposures occur train other on-site emer- gency staff (i.e., first responders) in assisting with emergency care plans keep necessary supplies on hand and follow the procedures outlined in the care plan. The OHN also should assess implications for follow-up, such as overdose of medication, rec- ommend a consultation, and provide instruction to take medication in prescribed doses not to exceed the prescribed limit. The nurse should maintain up-to-date information on PCCs and poison control at the workplace.
