Objectives Clinical Assessments and Interventions Follow-up Actions 185 Provide relief for person performing CPR (first responder or rescuer). When able, perform two-person CPR (one rescuer admin- istering ventilations and the other per- forming the chest compressions). Attach electrode pads to bare chest as di- rected: one on right upper chest above nip- ple and one below and to side of left nipple. If CPR was already begun while waiting for the AED to arrive, stop chest compressions just before attaching the pads. Follow the verbal and visual prompts. If needed, analyze the rhythm by pressing the Analyze button on the device. Press the Shock button, if indicated, ensur- ing that no one is touching the individual. Resume CPR immediately for 5 cycles. Check the rhythm every five cycles (2 min- utes) and follow AED prompts until emer- gency transport personnel take over or person starts to move. (See flowchart on page 235, Automated External Defibrillation [AED].) When another CPR-trained person arrives and indicates willingness to perform CPR, complete the set of 30:2 compression-to- ventilation ratio and remain at head to pro- vide ventilations or stay close by to resume CPR as needed. Have other person begin chest compressions. Continue CPR with a compression- ventilation ratio of 30:2 and switch posi- tions every 5 cycles or when the person performing chest compressions becomes fatigued. If a pulse and respirations are established, support the individual in the rescue posi- tion or a position of comfort and monitor vital signs until emergency transport is complete.
