69 Conjunctivitis 29 Definition Inflammation of the conjunctiva resulting from allergy bacterial, viral, or rickettsial infec- tion or physical or chemical trauma. Characteristics Redness, pain, swelling, tearing, discharge, burning, itching, photophobia, and blurred vision. Policy Evaluate employee in the occupational health unit. To avoid further contamination, do not use ophthalmological ointment for employees at work. Objectives Clinical Assessments and Interventions Referral for Medical Action No improvement in 2 to 3 days. Evidence of chemical injury or laceration of eye or cornea. Follow-up Actions Discuss hygiene principles. Instruct employee to apply warm compresses for 15 minutes 3 to 4 times per day as needed. Emphasize use of correct personal protective equipment. Determine extent and severity of prob- lem. Provide symptom relief. Prevent spread of infection to others. Assess eye for injury or infection. Check eyes for contact lenses and remove if possible. Irrigate eye with saline to remove dis- charge. Apply warm compresses for 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times per day. For itching, cool com- presses might provide relief. Instill ophthalmological drops to eye to clear inflammation or infection per stand- ing order when indicated. Instruct employee about personal hygiene to avoid spread of organism. Review job description and evaluate neces- sary work restrictions, including access to certain areas or processes. Advise employee not to share washcloths or towels. Caution against rubbing eyes.
