Explain pollution indexes and avoidance of outdoor activities on high-risk days. Discuss pacing activities and rest breaks. Assess work function requirements and ability to perform required ac- tivities. Counsel regarding job position changes when appropriate. Discuss medical treatments and compliance. Provide information on prescribed treatment (bron- chodilators and/or inhaled corti- costeroids usually are prescribed). Provide information and support for smoking cessation. Consult with safety and industrial hygiene professionals regarding identifying potential aggravating workplace exposures and effective controls. Provide symptom relief. Advise employee to rest and to increase oral fluid intake. Administer analgesics, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, per standing order. Administer expectorant per standing order. Discuss the use of a cool mist vaporizer to loosen phlegm.
