Based in the Public Health Service, under the Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC, NIOSH responsibilities include research on occupational safety and health problems, as well as on psychological, motivational, and behavioral factors as they relate to occupational safety and health training of occupational safety and health professionals hazard evaluation and toxicity de- terminations workforce development and training and industry-wide studies of chronic or low-level exposures to hazardous substances. OSHA is the federal agency responsible for the regula- tory functions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Housed in the Department of Labor, OSHA responsibilities include developing and updat- ing of mandatory occupational safety and health stan- dards monitoring and enforcing regulations and standards requiring employers to keep accurate records on work-related injuries, illnesses, and haz- ardous exposures collecting and maintaining occupa- tional safety and health statistics in conjunction with NIOSH and providing employer and worker educa- tion and training information to identify and prevent unsafe or unhealthy working conditions (also in con- junction with NIOSH).
