Provide support and counseling during any necessary rehabilita- tion. Educate employee regarding pre- cautions to prevent frostbite, in- cluding use of proper clothing, avoidance of prolonged exposure in cold temperatures, checking for signs of frostbite every 30 min- utes, and removal of wet clothing as soon as possible. Refer to EAP for counseling and support as needed, especially if there is permanent damage requir- ing a change in job or activity of daily living. Assist employee in return to work with appropriate job placement. Objectives Clinical Assessments and Interventions Follow-up Actions 209 Restore circulation and temperature of frozen part. Remove wet or frozen clothing and any- thing constricting. Immerse frozen part in warm (not hot) water for at least 20 to 30 minutes, or until affected part feels warm and sensation returns. Do not apply direct heat, such as a hot water bottle or heat lamp. Discontinue warming when the area becomes flushed. Handle the frostbitten area gently. Do not massage. Do not break blisters. Place dry, sterile gauze between frostbitten fingers or toes to keep them separated. Elevate the frostbitten parts. Give fluids, provided the victim is con- scious and not vomiting. Avoid giving caf- feine-containing drinks such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. (The caffeine in these substances cause the blood vessels to constrict.) Guideline continues on next page
