150 Treatment for Toothache (Requires Prescription by Health Care Provider or Dentist) Symptoms Treatment Toothache without fever and absence of extraoral swelling or intraoral swelling Toothache with low-grade temperature (101ºF), with slight intraoral or extraoral swelling Toothache with temperature 101ºF and intraoral or extraoral swelling causing asymmetry or possible abscess Referral to dentist within 24 hours for pain medication with acetaminophen, 650 mg PO every 4 hours, or ibuprofen, 400 mg PO every 4 hours Referral to dentist within 12 to 24 hours for antibiotic therapy such as penicillin V, 250 mg, or erythromycin, 250 mg PO every 6 hours, or drug of choice if infection is drug resistant and medication for pain with acetaminophen, 650 mg PO every 4 hours, or ibuprofen, 400 mg PO every 4 hours Immediate referral to dentist for consultation and treatment
